I have tried disabling all on-board devices (touch pad, sound blaster, serial ports, printer ports, etc.) but it does not resolve problem. For me, it's an IRQ problem. Under Win95, my MHz PCMCIA modem gets IRQ15, but under WinNT 4.0, it tries for IRQ5 (duh!!!) which conflicts with the SoundBlaster.

This might even cause me to lose my mind
The machine is now out of warranty. If I lightly push down to right of the touch pad while I reboot, often the screen will display correctly. Any ideas? Is it really a hard drive problem or a video chip or something loose on the motherboard? Does it sound like a very expensive fix? I like the machine,

Appeared to be a "film" between the touch pad layer and the LCD. Looked a lot like a mix of water and oil, kind of a rainbow effect. The feel of the screen seemed good. Just the distortion. The distortion is a not uncommon problem (I've seen quite a few touchscreen devices with this, not just Pilots/Palms).

A very weird problem
It starts making this sound as soon as you touch the power button, which seems to indicate that it's not OS related. When you have your finger on the touch pad, you can see the pointer jiggle in time to the clicking. The jiggle is more pronounced if the pointer is in a corner of the screen.
